What Is a Root Canal Treatment?

Understanding Root Canal Treatment and Tooth Restoration

A root canal is a dental procedure used to treat infection or inflammation inside a tooth. When the inner pulp of a tooth becomes infected or severely inflamed, treatment may be recommended to remove the affected tissue, clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth, and seal it to help prevent further infection. In many cases, root canal treatment allows you to keep your natural tooth rather than having it extracted.

Signs You May Need Root Canal Treatment :

  • Persistent or severe toothache
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers
  • Pain when biting or chewing
  • Swelling around the tooth or gums
  • Tender or swollen gums

ROOT CANAL FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Root Canal Treatment

Have questions about root canal treatment in Ottawa? Find answers to common questions about root canal therapy, symptoms of tooth infection, treatment, recovery, dental crowns and restoring your natural tooth.

Modern root canal treatment is performed with local anesthesia to numb the area. Some tenderness or sensitivity may occur after treatment.

Persistent tooth pain, prolonged sensitivity, pain when chewing, swelling or other symptoms may indicate a problem requiring dental assessment. Only an examination can determine whether root canal treatment is appropriate.

In many cases, root canal treatment can allow an infected or inflamed tooth to be retained rather than extracted, provided the tooth can be adequately restored.

Treatment time varies depending on the tooth and complexity of the case. Your dentist can provide a more specific estimate after examining the tooth.

A crown may be recommended depending on the amount of remaining tooth structure and the location of the tooth. Your dentist will determine whether additional protection is appropriate.

An untreated dental infection can worsen and may lead to increasing pain, swelling or damage to surrounding tissues. Prompt dental assessment is recommended when infection is suspected.

Some cracked teeth can affect the pulp inside the tooth and may require root canal treatment. The appropriate treatment depends on the location and extent of the crack.

Contact a dentist for an assessment, particularly if the pain is severe or accompanied by swelling, fever, facial swelling or difficulty swallowing.

Some dental emergencies involve infected or damaged teeth that may require root canal treatment. The dentist will first assess the tooth and determine the appropriate urgent treatment.

What is Root Canal Treatment? Every tooth has roots and every root has nerve. There are various stages of infection in a tooth. When the nerve or pulp in the tooth is irreversibly infected, Root Canal Treatment comes in play. In simple words, it’s a process of removing infected nerve from the tooth and filling it with a plastic like rubbery material called gutta percha. Thus the natural tooth is prevented from losing!
What are the benefits of Root Canal? Also spoken as Endodontics by dental folks, Root Canal is a way of saving the infected tooth. If we can save natural teeth then why not right! Nerve infections in tooth can be caused by extensive tooth decay, gum diseases, trauma, excessive wearing of teeth, etc. Root Canals are also combined with surgical interventions if the infected sites are extensive. Sometimes once treated teeth can get reinfected and need another treatment which are called re-treatment. Often times root canal treated teeth are covered with full coverage crowns to prevent them from breaking because they may have become brittle and can fracture.
